What is an FFL and why do I need one?

An explanation of Federal Firearms Licenses and why every GatSwap transfer uses one.

A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is a license issued by the ATF that authorizes a business to engage in the manufacture, import, or dealing of firearms. When you buy or trade a firearm through GatSwap, the physical transfer always happens at an FFL — never directly between two private parties by mail.

Why is an FFL required?

Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(a)) prohibits interstate transfers of firearms between unlicensed individuals. By routing every trade through a licensed FFL, GatSwap ensures every transfer is legal, documented, and includes a NICS background check.

What does the FFL do?

  • Receives the firearm from the seller's FFL via licensed carrier
  • Verifies the buyer's identity against their government ID
  • Has the buyer complete ATF Form 4473
  • Runs the NICS background check
  • Releases the firearm to the buyer once cleared

All FFLs in the GatSwap network are license-verified and community-rated. You can view an FFL's rating and reviews before selecting them for your transfer.
