What is an FFL transfer?

A plain-language explanation of FFL transfers.

An FFL transfer is the process of legally transferring ownership of a firearm through a federally licensed dealer. It's required for all GatSwap trades because federal law prohibits direct interstate transfer of firearms between unlicensed individuals.

In a GatSwap trade, the seller ships their firearm to the buyer's chosen FFL. The FFL receives it, has the buyer complete Form 4473, runs a NICS check, and releases the firearm once cleared.

Why can't we just ship directly?

Under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922), only FFLs can receive firearms shipped via common carrier from private individuals. Shipping directly to a private party is a federal felony.
